Why am I passionate about this?

I’ve always been in love with the idea of love. I didn’t know what that feeling was like for a long time–not being in love myself–so I grew attached to fictionalised worlds that brought those ideas to life. I’ve always been the person who smiles at a meet-cute or feels that warm, fuzzy feeling inside when the couple you’ve been rooting for the last two hundred pages finally kisses. I want them to know how exciting it can be to feel loved and experience that through the creation of stories. This is why romance is, and likely always will be, a huge thematic influence on all forms of my work.

The books I picked & why

Book cover of To All the Boys I've Loved Before

Madi Lalor Why did I love this book?

Although To All The Boys I Loved Before is marketed for young adults, it is a novel that any age will enjoy.

It’s incredibly fitting for me and anyone who struggles with overcoming the fear of expressing their feelings for someone; it is often easier to write about those feelings instead of openly telling them! I relate so much to the innocence and inquisitive personality of the protagonist, Lara-Jean Song Covey.

Her traits are similar to that of my own main character, Luna, in The Way We Were Before. They both share a deep love of family values that drives the decisions that take them through the plotted journey of their stories. It’s a light-hearted trilogy that will warm your soul.

Why should I read it?

5 authors picked To All the Boys I've Loved Before as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 12, 13, 14, and 15.

Now a Netflix feature film!
Lara Jean keeps her love letters in a hatbox her mother gave her.

One for every boy she's ever loved.

When she writes, she can pour out her heart and soul and say all
the things she would never say in real life, because her letters
are for her eyes only.

Until the day her secret letters are mailed,
and suddenly Lara Jean's love life goes from imaginary to out of control!

Book cover of All the Bright Places

Madi Lalor Why did I love this book?

I’ve always loved stories that explore the themes of love and loss and how they entwine as one. All The Bright Places is no exception to this. Be warned; you may shed some tears!

The emotional connection you create with this book is something I tried to tap into with my own writing, and I hope that the authenticity of All The Bright Places is something that can be found in my own work. I love this book with my whole heart. I often write characters with past trauma, which becomes apparent as they begin working on themselves through the plot's unravelling.

I see so many similarities between my own characters to that of Violet Markey, a main character in All The Bright Places. She is what I consider to be an inspiration to my own writing from the very beginning. It’s truly an emotional tale filled with important topics of conversation that deserve to be heard.

6 authors picked All the Bright Places as one of their favorite books, and they share why you should read it. This book is for kids age 14, 15, 16, and 17.

What is this book about?

Now a major film starring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith on Netflix.

A compelling and beautiful story about a girl who learns to live from a boy who wants to die.

Theodore Finch constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself, but each time something good stops him.

Violet Markey exists for the future, counting the days until she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief for her late sister.

When they meet on the ledge of a tower, what might have been their end turns into their beginning.

It's only with Violet that Finch can truly be…

Book cover of Letters to the Lost

Madi Lalor Why did I love this book?

I remember how engrossed I was when I first read this story.

This is yet another inspiration for the plot of my own story. It’s another story that explores how characters faced with grief can come together, connecting through the loss in their lives.

I’ve always been fond of broken characters who help repair each other. In Letters to the Lost, the characters begin writing anonymous letters to each other about recurring issues in their lives. There is something quite heartwarming about the way others can help you heal. I think it’s a beautiful story, something I wish I could say I’d written.

What is this book about?

In this romantic novel perfect for fans of Nicola Yoon, New York Times bestselling author Brigid Kemmerer will have you wondering . . . can you fall in love with someone you've never met?

Book cover of The Love Hypothesis

Madi Lalor Why did I love this book?

If you’re looking for something a bit more light-hearted, The Love Hypothesis is definitely for you.

Although it explores the enemies-to-lovers trope very well (my favourite type of trope to write and read!), it also takes on comedic undertones that give the story such a refreshing feel. Hazelwood is a great romance novelist (and a seriously smart STEM worker) and someone I look up to when it comes to the intricate creation of her plot.

The book was impossible to put down! I love reading her work so that I can improve upon my own enemies-to-lovers plotlines.

Book cover of Five Feet Apart

Madi Lalor Why did I love this book?

A gut-wrenching but provokingly beautiful story that highlights an illness that isn’t spoken much about in fiction.

The relationship between Stella and Will is such a heartbreakingly warming story that gives the reader a new-found understanding of how cystic fibrosis can impact an individual's life. I enjoy reading stories involving new, important conversations that need to be had, especially on topics we don’t often see in novels.

I think it’s important for writing to help spread awareness. It’s something that I myself want to do more in my own work.

New book alert!

Why am I passionate about this?

I have been to, and loved, North, Central, and especially East Africa for over fifty years. Only six times have I been to Africa on holiday; more often, perhaps twenty or more times, as a television producer. Working in Africa gains a perspective of reality that the glories of vacation do not. Each has its place, each its pitfalls like stalled plane rides with emergency landings in the bush or attacks by wildlife. But, in the end, the magic of the “otherness,” what an old friend called “primitava” captures one’s soul and changes your life.

Peter's book list on the otherness that few get to experience
